What it's all about!

So I thought I would start my own blog to tackle some of the problems with over the years with baking, owning my own business, track my experiences and let you get to know me a little better!

So let me introduce myself. I am married and have a very active 2 year old and we live in Brompton near Gillingham in Kent. I have run Major Bakes since June 2014 but as most cake bakers I have been baking at home for many years too.

Before having my daughter I worked as an Environmental Consultant dealing with contaminated land, it’s what my university degree led me to and I worked hard to get where I was. I went on building sites dressed in a hard hat and steel toecap boots in all weather, researched all sorts of unusual topics and went to client meetings. I kept a lot of plates spinning and was constantly learning to juggle more. All great practice though!

I left to have my daughter in August 2012 and for many reasons I decided to not return to my old job. I did work for a party plan company for a brief time, which gave me an insight into running a stall at fairs, money and time management. I quickly got bored of taking home a paltry sum each month and working incredibly hard when my heart really wasn’t in it. Moving to a new location meant I was essentially starting from scratch again and it really put the nail in the coffin for that little venture.

This led me to think of what else I could do, and I no longer feared working for myself!

Baking has always been a love of mine. I used to spend a lot of time with my Grandma who was a housewife and made EVERYTHING from scratch, generally without the use of kitchen scales too (much braver than me). At home I often baked with my parents too, although I was usually the instigator by looking through recipe books. I have always loved recipe books and still have my first one sitting proudly on my shelf. I dread to think how many I’ve got now though.

I don’t really class myself as a foodie, I’m much too fussy for that. I do love food though and recently when talking to my husband I realised where he remembers people, places etc and the music he was listening to, I actually remember the food I ate!

I do have a sweet tooth and absolutely love cake, we had cupcakes for our wedding in 6 flavours and so when I set up business I wanted to provide customers with a big range of flavours and lots of flexibility.

Major Bakes was born!
